Bipolar disorder

This animated explainer was created to provide a clearer understanding of Bipolar Disorder, focusing on its diverse symptoms and the experience of living with fluctuating mood states.

The aim was to demystify the condition, challenge common misconceptions, and foster empathy by visually representing the highs and lows associated with both manic/hypomanic and depressive episodes. The video sought to offer an accessible and compassionate overview, encouraging recognition of symptoms and the importance of seeking support.

I designed a cast of expressive 3D characters, placing them in various relatable environments and situations to illustrate the broad spectrum of emotional and behavioural changes characteristic of Bipolar Disorder.

Scenes depict characters experiencing intense joy, deep sadness, irritability, and racing thoughts. These 3D character renders, along with bespoke environmental assets, were meticulously animated and composited in After Effects to create a dynamic and emotionally resonant narrative.

Challenges & Creative Decisions

One of the significant creative challenges was to visually articulate the dramatic shifts in mood inherent in Bipolar Disorder without oversimplifying or sensationalising the experience.

To address this, I used dynamic shifts in colour palettes, environmental lighting, and character animation pacing to symbolise the transition between manic and depressive states. For instance, vibrant, energetic scenes might quickly contrast with subdued, slower-paced visuals to represent the rapid cycling of moods.

Another key decision involved portraying complex emotional states through character performance. Leveraging 3D character models from Daz Studio allowed for subtle yet impactful variations in facial expressions, body language, and gestures to convey the intensity of different moods, from exhilaration and impulsivity to profound sadness and withdrawal.

This approach ensured the animation was emotionally compelling while maintaining accuracy and sensitivity, guiding viewers to a deeper understanding of the internal realities of Bipolar Disorder.
