Medical Illustration & Annotation
Challenge
Medical topics can often be overwhelming for both patients and non-specialist clinicians. Complex anatomy, unfamiliar procedures, and technical health concepts can create barriers to understanding and informed decision-making. My goal was to create clear, accurate, and approachable visuals that demystify these subjects without oversimplifying critical details.
Solutions
Anatomical Illustrations: Created detailed yet accessible anatomical diagrams to support patient education materials, clinical guides, and explainer animations. Each illustration was carefully annotated to highlight key structures and relationships, making medical information easier to visualise and remember.
Visual Annotation Systems: Designed consistent annotation styles — including labelling, callouts, and visual hierarchies — to maintain clarity across different content formats (static graphics, interactive web tools, and motion graphics).
Process
Research and Clinical Collaboration: Worked closely with healthcare professionals to validate all anatomical and procedural representations, ensuring medical accuracy while maintaining visual simplicity.
User-Centred Visual Testing: Conducted feedback sessions with patients and non-specialist audiences to test comprehension, clarity, and emotional tone. Iterated based on real-world user insights to refine both illustration style and annotation logic.
Impact
Improved audience comprehension of health conditions and procedures.
Increased engagement rates on digital platforms using annotated visual content.
