EU Parliament chart
Project Brief
This animated chart visualises how seats in the European Parliament are allocated to each EU member state. Designed for broadcast, the goal was to create a dynamic, easy-to-follow breakdown of representation across the union.
1. Information Gathering
Data was sourced from the official European Parliament website and supplementary EU documentation outlining the latest seat distribution post-Brexit. Each country’s number of seats was verified and cross-checked for accuracy with publicly released records.
2. Content Planning & Structure
The content was structured to first introduce the overall number of seats, then transition into a country-by-country breakdown. Special attention was given to ordering, from largest to smallest, to guide viewer understanding. Visual hierarchy was used to reinforce the disparity in representation across countries.
3. Design Execution
The chart was initially created in Flourish, allowing for quick data visualisation and layout experimentation. Once finalised, it was exported as an SVG and imported into Illustrator for further design refinement, including colour adjustments, typography, and layout tweaks. The final assets were then animated in After Effects, where transitions and highlights were added to bring each country’s data to life for broadcast use.
4. Visual Strategy
The animation underwent review with editorial and broadcast teams, who suggested adjustments to timing and pacing for screen use. Additional narration cues were added to match visual emphasis and improve accessibility.
5. Outcome
The final piece aired across multiple news segments and was repurposed for digital channels. It successfully conveyed a complex numerical distribution in under 30 seconds, making EU parliamentary structure more accessible to general audiences across Europe.
