Map-America's military preparation near Iran
Project Brief
This infographic animation was produced for Core News to explain the strategic deployment of U.S. military forces in the lead-up to renewed nuclear negotiations with Iran. The aim was to contextualise diplomatic talks with clear, geographic visuals showing regional military readiness.
1. Information Gathering
Data and intelligence were sourced from defence briefings, international news reports, and satellite-based open-source intelligence platforms. Particular focus was placed on locations of U.S. naval carriers, air bases, and long-range capabilities, especially the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean.
2. Content Planning & Structure
The piece was structured around a world map with key emphasis on the Middle East and Indian Ocean. The narrative moved from broad regional context to specific sites, showing the proximity and purpose of each military installation. The pacing was designed to mirror the unfolding diplomatic timeline.
3. Design Execution
Using GeoLayers in After Effects, I built an animated map highlighting base locations, deployment routes, and airstrike ranges. Supporting vector elements such as aircraft, radar arcs, and symbols, were designed in Adobe Illustrator and imported into the animation. Motion cues were used to guide the viewer across the map clearly and purposefully.
4. Visual Strategy
Feedback was received from the editorial director at Core News, who requested more clarity around the function of Diego Garcia and its relevance to Iran-related operations. Labels and supporting text were adjusted accordingly, and animation pacing was fine-tuned for better narrative rhythm.
5. Outcome
The final piece aired during a special report and was later used on social media platforms to help explain the military-diplomatic tension. It was praised for its clarity and ability to visually anchor a politically complex moment in a format that felt both informative and accessible.
